Alan’s Blog

I can’t believe that I seem to be attracting a following for this technological “turn-around” from myself – the most dinosaur-like person on the planet!  However, let no-one forget that it is Ryan who pushes the buttons, prints the outputs, inputs the data, keeps the computer links alive!!

I only write the words on scrap paper!

What has the Summer of ’16 produced?  Again, another load of action, events, activities, fun and enjoyment.

*An exchange trip to Co. Leitrim, Eire (thanks Causeway and our Irish friends)

**A Summer Playscheme (thanks to Radio Tay – Cash For Kids)

***A Stirling Castle & Edinburgh Castle adventure (thanks to Historic Scotland)

****Trips to Ceres & Falkland for our Over 50’s (thanks to Age Scotland)

*****A highly successful July 30th Fun Day/Fundraiser (thanks to Jen & her army of Volunteers)

******A Menolej Group 25th Anniversary Dinner at the Queen’s Hotel (thanks to the group for the invitation)

And in the words of Jimmy Cricket (who remembers him?  Answers on a postcard to Alan!)….

Come here, And there’s more!!…..Well in my next Blog……You’ll just have to wait!!!

Alan’s Blog

Hi, Everyone

It’s Alan’s Blog again…..but don’t forget, it’s just my words….I am not “in-putting” the information into the (what do you call it – “Computer – thing”!!)

The Settlement is going very well at the moment.  We have the right  Executive Committee team, conscientious staff, terrific volunteer support and lots and lots of daily/weekly participants and groups.  Oh – the treasurer told me – “the accounts are looking good!”  Let’s keep it going….onwards and upwards.

The Jailbreak (on March 19th) was enjoyed by all.  We are grateful to all of the sponsors.  The final figure raised was approximately £4000.  We will be giving half of the amount raised to the Broughty Ferry Lifeboat very soon.

Arrangements for the Apex Hotel Fundraising Ball on Saturday 4th June are well ahead of schedule.  It looks like we will have 200 attending that night.  There are a lot of newcomers from last year’s participants, so we are very happy with that.  I am sure we will all have a great, great time……..and the Settlement will add some money to our funds.

The Summer and Autumn will have youth and community Exchange Projects to Eire, Italy and Poland.  We will tell you more in the next BLOG around June/July time……

Keep in touch, or better still, drop in to the Settlement.

Keep smiling….and smiling….and smiling!!!!

Alan’s Blog – November 2015

Well, 3 months have passed, since Alan’s last Blog……and he still remembers what a Blog is!!  He refuses – as yet – to record his thoughts on the site “Confused.com”!!

So what has been happening?

Our Irish Dancing Group – The McCann School of Irish Dance – had a brilliant, successful adventure in Dublin and China.

Our Ever Alerts Group visited The Kelpies at Falkirk.

We had four very successful October Playscheme Away Days – well done Liam, Kasia, Nicole and Callum!

Alan visited our Community Project Partners in Ceparana, near Pisa….and confirmed the second stage of our Intergenerational Group Exchange Project for September 2016.

The Enable Scotland Youth Employability Group ran a wonderful Party Day for Older People on Wednesday 28 October.

We had a Staff Team Night Out on Friday 6 November, which was thoroughly enjoyable, such a happy atmosphere and the company was a pleasure to be with…as we looked forward to future happinesses and happenings.

It’s fundraising time now – Puddings, Hats, Snowmen, Robins, Bells, Stockings – a great Settlement effort.  Thanks and well done to everyone.

Keep Smiling……

Alan’s Blog (August/September 2015)

Well, the last few months have been positive. The settlement is more settled! There is much more happiness around the building!! Previous bad times are being left behind – slowly but surely. Commitment, loyalty and sincerity does prevail. The future is indeed, brighter!!

The Italian/Scottish intergenerational  project between the 6th and 15th August was a huge success, the weather was kind, the program was enjoyed, the groups got on well….and the final freuchie ceilidh was tremendous fun. We thank the Irish dancers, the Highland dancers, Ian McCallum (accordion), Robbie Houston (bagpipe player) and Sandra Doig (help with buffet) – for making it such a great night. We now start the planning for an outward trip to Italy in 2016.

The Summer holidays are over now and the Autumn/Winter programmes are on the go. Our Children’s Work has seen a welcome, and overdue, change for the better, our Schools’ Partnership programme is making a difference, participant numbers have been higher these past months………there is so much to be positive about, that being settled is THE WAY TO GO>>>>>>>>> Keep smiling………next BLOG soon!!

Alan’s Blog (June ’15)

Well June has, so far, been eventful and exciting!  The Ever Alerts Group dodged the rain, as they made it up and down Kinnoull Hill….with Grant J. leading the way.

Our Transition Group Project has gone from strength to strength.  It is so reassuring to have such a competent and trustworthy team of adult staff.

Our Youth/Intergenerational work is going ever so well.  Ryan and Andrew really are “producing” the goods.

W. L. Gore employees (Maria G. plus 3) paid us a very welcome visit, handing over a £500 cheque too (always appreciated).

Our Charity Fundraising Ball went brilliantly on Saturday 6 June at the Apex Hotel.  So many people enjoyed themselves, and have asked for tickets for next year.  This is encouraging.  Do you want to go?  If you do – phone Alan at 01382-223943.  This would prove someone, somewhere reads this “BLOG COMPUTER STUFF” !!!

Till the next time……keep smiling.

Alan’s Blog Update (April 2015)

April 2015 – well it was when I wrote this short article!

The past few months have been hectic, stressful, enjoyable, incredible, unusual, busy……to use just a few descriptors!!

Good plans are in place for the future, thanks to the efforts, patience and inputs from staff, group members and other supportive agencies.  I thank you most sincerely for all of that.

Now we look forward with improving enthusiasm.  I will tell you more…….in my next Blog.

Best Wishes,

Alan

Grey Lodge Settlement, Dundee.

Alan’s Blog Update (November)

Well, this is my first chance to create a “write-up” since September.

There have been quite a few things happened since then, but many of them don’t deserve space…or indeed wasted space at that!

More importantly, our youth work has gone from strength to strength.  The 4 x AAAA’s Project has been immense – the young people’s participation, school input and, of course, Iain Glass’s constant hard work and effort.  It is a shame that future changes are coming.

The evening youth groups have had a varied, challenging and very worthwhile programme.  There is more to come in December, and in 2015.

The Slovenia Youth Project was most interesting in October.  I’m sure others will talk about that!

The Settlement is coping, despite some small drawbacks.  The present is busy……….but the future is exciting.  Let us all feel like that!!

Alan’s Blog Update (September)

It is certainly a long time since I last asked one of the Settlement staff to put on an update on to our BLOG site!

But don’t despair

It’s now fair

I’ve added some

Not too dumb!

Hope you enjoy

From the ‘Older Boy’!!

In July, the second leg of our Dundee-Ceparana (Italy) Exchange took place over in Italy……..and it was a huge success.  Both sets of young people were terrific ambassadors for their respective agencies.  The youth workers were certainly proud of them all….especially at the Country Dancing Workshops in Bolano on the 26th/27th July.

Then, in August, we had a hosting Exchange leg with the Hive Youth Club, from Bornacoola in Co. Leitrim.  Again, this was terrific and a whole lot of fun, enjoyment, learning and togetherness happened.  These are the positive aspects of all youth group work.  Long may we all have such results.

Now we look forward to the Autumn months……and my next Blog!!
